Mercedes is best known for its “Mercedes Group of Islands” – a pristine archipelago made up of seven majestic islets including Apuao Grande, Apuao Pequeña, Caringo, Quinapaguian, and Malasugui. The Mercedes Lighthouse (also called Parola) proudly stands on the coast, guiding fisherfolk and symbolizing resilience. The locals primarily speak Bicolano (Bicol Central), with Tagalog and English widely understood. Expect a lot of cheerful greetings, warm kamusta ka na, and easy conversations filled with heart.

You haven’t truly visited Mercedes if you haven’t tasted Kinunot na Pagi (stingray in coconut milk), sinantolan, grilled seafood, and tinapa (smoked fish) from the town’s local smokehouses. Street snacks and kakanin like puto, suman, and maruya also make regular appearances in households and town stalls.

Every September, the town comes alive with the Mercedes Kadagatan Festival – a week-long celebration honoring the sea and its blessings. Expect colorful street parades, fluvial processions, dance competitions, and an overflowing seafood banquet! It’s a cultural immersion like no other.

Folk songs, kundiman, and Bicolano love ballads often echo during fiestas and family gatherings. Locals strum guitars and sing under moonlit nights, blending music with the sounds of waves and laughter.
